He began by describing the 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly intractable conflict between two approaches to thinking: the hard-headed empiricist determination to live and abide by the facts, versus the tender-minded tendency to a priori principles that rely on rationalization. He promised pragmatism could help bridge this gap.

He defined 'praxy,' as a concept or truth that is not rooted in a idealized theory, but in the present world. He believed that pragmatism was the most true and natural way of approaching human problems, and all other philosophical approaches were flawed in some way or other.

Other philosophers who developed pragmatist ideas in the 1900s included George Herbert Mead and W.E.B Du Bois, who formulated pragmatic perspectives on social science and the study of race relations; Alain Locke, who developed pragmatist ideas regarding the structure of science and education as well as John Dewey, who articulated pragmatic ideas in the areas of public policy, education, and democracy.
